The final meeting of the season! Perhaps the "AGM" deterred people as we didn't have quite as many as usual. Jim devised an excellent quiz for us and there were four tables of 3. My table (Dennis, Mary and me) thought we had done very well but in fact we were last! The winners – Nancy, Callum and Robert – were presented with lottery tickets as their prize! I am sure they will be generous with their winnings . . .
Many thanks to Tommy T for lending us his "Tanker Lorry" photographs. The A3 versions were put up on the wall and generated a lot of interest. You can look at the photographs by clicking here.
The committee will meet in May to finalise dates for next session and also to (hopefully) arrange a summer get together for everyone. More details will follow.

Great to see a really good turn out once again. I think this time the coffee/tea ratio was correct and the biscuits were certainly popular! Many thanks to all who contributed to the raffle and well done to the winners.
Christine Miller returned to continue the story of her family research. As always she gave an extremely interesting talk and although progressing, her research into this particular aspect of her family is by no means complete! We hope to hear more on the subject next year.
Christine has very kindly provided some links to help anyone else trying to research family members and these are shown below.
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk: The main starting point for any family history research. Contains soldiers' wills from WW1.
www.cwgc.org: Information on soldier's graves wherever their location. Lots of info on cemeteries including copies of registers, photographs etc.
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk: Provides online access to regimental diaries and service records.
www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk: Digitised and indexed national and local newspapers. Subscriptions available - monthly, annual or pay as you go. Now free in some libraries.
www.findmypast.co.uk: Access to English records.
www.ancestry.co.uk: Some WW1 records as well as other family history records.

22 January 2016
The January meeting was, once again, very well attended. So much so that we had to send for extra coffee!
Our speaker was Mr Watt of “Past and Present”. Mr Watt has given a talk every year for the last 27 years, always on a different theme – that must surely be a record. He always extends an invitation to visit his shop if you are in the area – the address is Past and Present, 3 Lainshaw Street, Stewarton KA3 5BY.
This year his theme was "Antiques of the Past – no longer in use". Initially we did wonder if he was talking about us and were relieved to find out he wasn't!
We were treated to a fascinating talk, ably demonstrated with real items including buttons, buckles, snuff boxes, lorgnettes, portable ink bottles and pens, tiny little boxes used to keep a stamp in and even an opium pipe (lest anyone be concerned it was just the pipe – no opium!).

19 NOVEMBER 2015
Our speaker on 19 November was Paula Baker, Reserve Manager at RSPB Loch Lomond. She gave a very interesting talk about the reserve and its development. We were amazed to hear of the scope of the activities - agriculture, insects, spiders, plants, trees. All related to managing the land.
Paula explained how gradually, as the work proceeds, more species are being found on the reserve. The Spotted Crake, a rare migrant, was found there this year. She played a sound recording of the Spotted Crake's call - just in case any of us come across it elsewhere!
Before the talk Paula drew the raffle. I think it is fair to say that all winners were very happy with their prizes.
As you can see in one of the photographs there was a large banner of photographs of the early days of Bishopbriggs on display. This provoke a lot of interest and sharing of memories. We hope to provide similar items of interest at future meetings so, at great risk of repetition, please let us know if you have any photographs we can borrow. We promise we will return them!

Do you remember? The Bishopbriggs poster brings back a few memories.
15 OCTOBER 2015
The first meeting of the season was held on Thursday 15 October. Our speaker was Craig Collier, Police Community Officer. Craig gave an excellent talk on how to stay safe and secure, both in the home and out and about. He also provided leaflets giving further information. You can look at this information online by looking at the Links page in the menu above.
We held two raffles at the meeting, the normal one and a special one to win a £25 voucher for Sarti Italian Restaurant. Chris Riding was the lucky winner and he will receive the voucher at our Christmas Lunch on 10 December.

The committee are trying to organise get-togethers for members who are not able to attend the main meetings. The inaugural 'satellite' coffee morning was held in Newton Mearns on Thursday 27 August, a good time was had by all!
If you are interested in attending a "satellite" coffee morning please get in touch via the Contact page in the menu above and we will be in touch.
